Scilla bifolia (alpine/two-leaf squill) is a small blue-flowered spring bulb grown as a woodland-garden ornamental. IMPORTANT: like other squills its bulb is toxic, containing irritant saponins and glycosides that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and (with the cardiac-glycoside-bearing squills) heart effects in overdose. Scilla bifolia is chiefly of toxicological and ornamental interest: like other squills its bulb contains steroidal saponins and glycosides that are irritant and toxic in quantity (the medicinal squills, Drimia/Urginea, contain cardiac glycosides used historically as expectorants and heart remedies, but these are potent poisons). There is little basis for safe home use of alpine squill. Had only minor and risky historic folk use (following the squill tradition) as an expectorant and diuretic; because of its toxicity these uses are obsolete, and it is grown almost entirely as an ornamental spring bulb. The powerful medicinal 'squill' is a different, potent (and toxic) plant used only under strict control.له استعمالٌ شعبي تاريخي طفيف خطر فقط (على تقليد السقلّ) طارداً للبلغم ومُدرّاً؛ ولسميّته هذه الاستعمالات مهجورة، وهو يُزرَع كلّه تقريباً بصلة زينةٍ ربيعية. و«السقلّ» الطبي القويّ نبتةٌ مختلفة قويّة (وسامّة) لا تُستعمَل إلا تحت رقابةٍ صارمة.
