Its principal alkaloid berberine is well studied: clinical and animal work shows it can lower blood sugar and cholesterol and has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions. Most rigorous human evidence concerns purified berberine rather than whole-plant Berberis aristata.قلويدها الرئيس «البربارين» مدروسٌ جيداً: تُظهر الدراسات السريرية والحيوانية أنه قد يخفض سكر الدم والكوليسترول وله فعاليةٌ مضادة للميكروبات والالتهاب. وأغلب الأدلة البشرية الدقيقة تخصّ البربارين النقيّ لا نبتة البرباريس كاملة.

Used in Ayurveda for eye and ear infections (as a wash), skin diseases and wounds, diarrhoea and dysentery, liver complaints and diabetes.تُستعمل في الأيورفيدا لعدوى العين والأذن (غسولاً) والأمراض الجلدية والجروح والإسهال والزحار وشكاوى الكبد والسكري.

Do not use in infants or young children (jaundice risk).لا يُستعمل للرضّع والأطفال الصغار (خطر اليرقان).
Cautionتحذيرات
Berberine can lower blood sugar and blood pressure (additive with those medicines) and inhibits liver drug-metabolising enzymes, raising the levels of many prescription drugs — take care with any medication. Avoid strictly in pregnancy, breastfeeding and newborns because of the risk of jaundice/kernicterus.قد يخفض البربارين سكر الدم وضغطه (بالإضافة إلى تلك الأدوية) ويثبّط إنزيمات الكبد المُستقلِبة للأدوية، فيرفع مستوى كثيرٍ من الأدوية الموصوفة — احذر مع أيّ دواء. ويُتجنَّب بصرامة في الحمل والرضاعة والولدان لخطر اليرقان/اليرقان النووي.
Pregnancy & nursingالحمل والرضاعة
Do NOT use in pregnancy or breastfeeding — berberine can cross to the baby and may cause or worsen newborn jaundice (kernicterus risk).لا يُستعمل في الحمل أو الرضاعة — قد ينتقل البربارين إلى الطفل وقد يُسبّب أو يُفاقم يرقان الوليد (خطر اليرقان النووي).
