Introduction

Silene latifolia (white campion, formerly Silene alba) is a night-scented pink-family wildflower. Its young leaves and shoots are edible cooked, and its saponin-rich roots were used like soapwort as a natural soap/wash. In folk use the crushed plant was applied to corns, warts and skin problems. It is chiefly a wild edible and a mild saponin plant rather than a strong medicine.

Research

Silene latifolia is documented as an edible wild plant and a saponin-containing species (its roots lather like soapwort); the genus is also studied for phytoecdysteroids and flavonoids. Its medicinal use is largely traditional/folk (topical skin use and a mild saponin wash); robust clinical evidence is lacking.

Caution

Correct identification is advised before eating.
