Introduction

Salvadora oleoides (jhal/pilu, Indian salt tree) is a desert tree of the Salvadoraceae — the same family as the toothbrush/miswak tree (Salvadora persica). Its twigs are used like miswak for oral hygiene, its leaves, bark and fruit are used in folk medicine for digestion, rheumatism and coughs, and it yields edible fruit and a seed oil.

Research

Salvadora oleoides belongs to the same genus as the miswak tree, whose antibacterial/antiplaque benefits are well documented in dental research; S. oleoides extracts and twigs likewise show antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and are used for oral hygiene. Most rigorous clinical evidence in this genus is for Salvadora persica (miswak) rather than S. oleoides specifically.

☾ Prophetic reference☾

Salvadora oleoides is a close relative of Salvadora persica — the arāk/siwāk tree of the authentic Sunnah of the toothstick (miswāk), which the Prophet ﷺ strongly encouraged for cleaning the mouth and pleasing the Lord. The genuine prophetic siwāk is Salvadora persica; S. oleoides is a related species whose twigs are used similarly as chewing sticks in some regions, so it shares in the miswāk tradition by kinship and use rather than being the exact species named.

Adult dosage

Twig used as a chewing stick for the teeth; leaf/bark decoction in traditional amounts; per traditional practice.

Child dosage

Chewing sticks can be used for older children's teeth; medicinal doses only with guidance.

Caution

Chewing-stick use is safe and beneficial for teeth. Medicinal leaf/bark dosing is not standardised; the plant has a peppery, pungent chemistry, so avoid concentrated internal doses in pregnancy and use moderately. This is a relative of — not identical to — the authentic miswak tree Salvadora persica.

Pregnancy & nursing

Chewing-stick oral use is fine; avoid concentrated medicinal bark/leaf doses in pregnancy without guidance.
