Meadow buttercup is documented as an irritant, mildly toxic plant: its ranunculin releases protoanemonin, a blistering agent that inflames skin and mucous membranes and makes it acrid and unsafe to eat (it also deters grazing animals). Historically the fresh plant was used as an external counter-irritant 'blister', but this is hazardous. Drying largely destroys the toxin. No safe internal use. Historically the fresh, crushed plant was applied externally as a counter-irritant 'blister' for joint pain and to raise blisters — a dangerous practice now abandoned. Chiefly a plant to recognise and avoid.لا استعمال داخليّ آمن. وتاريخياً وُضِعت النبتة الطازجة المهروسة خارجياً مُهيِّجاً مُضادّاً «مُبثِّراً» لألم المفاصل ولإحداث بثور — وهي ممارسةٌ خطيرة مهجورة الآن. وهي أساساً نبتةٌ تُعرَف وتُتجنَّب.

The FRESH plant contains protoanemonin, which blisters and inflames skin, and irritates the mouth, throat and gut if eaten (causing burning, salivation, vomiting and colic) — do not eat it and avoid prolonged skin contact with the crushed plant. The old 'blistering' external use is unsafe.
