Introduction
Brassica nigra (black mustard) is the pungent seed behind mustard condiment and the classic warming 'mustard plaster'. Its sinigrin releases allyl isothiocyanate — the hot, antimicrobial compound with documented antioxidant and anticancer-screening activity.

Research
Black mustard seed is well documented for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, and its allyl isothiocyanate is widely studied for anticancer effects in the laboratory. Externally, mustard plasters act as a rubefacient, drawing blood to the skin to ease chest congestion and muscle pain — a traditional use with a clear pharmacological basis, though it can burn if left on too long.

Traditional use
A kitchen spice and condiment, a digestive stimulant, and — most famously — a warming 'mustard plaster' applied to the chest for coughs and colds and to aching joints and muscles; a foot-bath of mustard for colds and headaches.
Current use
Used as mustard condiment and spice, and in warming chest/muscle rubs and plasters.

Adult dosage
Culinary amounts freely; as a plaster, mix ground seed with flour and warm water, apply briefly (a few minutes, not on broken skin).
Child dosage
Culinary use is fine; use skin plasters very cautiously and briefly on children, if at all (risk of burns).
Caution
Very safe as food. As a plaster it is a strong rubefacient — leave it on only a few minutes and never on broken skin, as it can cause redness, blistering and burns if left too long. The concentrated volatile oil is very irritating to eyes and airways. Large medicinal seed doses can irritate the stomach.
Pregnancy & nursing
Culinary amounts are safe; avoid large medicinal doses and prolonged skin plasters in pregnancy.
