Introduction
Salvia verbenaca (wild clary, 'clear-eye') is a Mediterranean/European wild sage. Like other sages it is a digestive, antiseptic and astringent herb (for indigestion, sore throats, mouth and wounds), and its mucilaginous seeds were famously placed in the eye to gather and wash out grit ('clear-eye'). Reviews report antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activity.

Research
Salvia verbenaca is documented in a comprehensive phytochemistry/biology review for antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activity, driven by rosmarinic acid, flavonoids and its essential oil, supporting its traditional digestive, antiseptic and wound use; the seed mucilage explains the old 'clear-eye' eye-cleansing use. Evidence is preclinical.

Traditional use
Used like sage as a digestive, antiseptic astringent gargle and mouth rinse for sore throat and inflamed gums, on wounds and skin, and for coughs and colds; the whole soaked seeds were placed under the eyelid to gather and carry out dust/grit ('clear-eye', an old eye-cleansing remedy).
Current use
Used as a sage-type digestive/antiseptic and wound folk herb; studied for antioxidant, antimicrobial and antidiabetic activity.
Preparations
• Leaf infusion (digestive tea)
• Gargle/mouth rinse
• Wound/skin wash
• (Historic seed eye-cleanser — not advised)•
Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Leaf infusion 1–2 g in hot water 2–3× daily; the same as a gargle; per traditional practice (the eye use is historic — modern eye care is preferred).
Child dosage
A weak gargle for older children's sore throat; avoid the eye use.
Caution
Like other sages it contains some thujone, so avoid high/prolonged internal doses and the concentrated oil, and avoid it in pregnancy, breastfeeding and epilepsy. Do NOT put seeds or plant material in the eye by the old 'clear-eye' method — it risks infection and injury; use proper eye care instead. Gargle and tea amounts are gentle.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid medicinal doses in pregnancy — sages contain thujone and are traditionally cautioned; culinary amounts only.
