Bridelia ferruginea is a West-African tree whose bark and leaves are a well-known traditional remedy for diabetes, stomach and mouth complaints, and infections. Studies identified catechins in Bridelia ferruginea root/bark as antidiabetic compounds that lower blood sugar, and reviews document its antimicrobial, antioxidant and antidiabetic-nephroprotective activity — supporting its major traditional use for diabetes as well as for the gut, mouth and infections. Generally used safely in traditional amounts. Its blood-sugar-lowering effect can add to diabetes medicines — monitor if diabetic and coordinate with a doctor rather than replacing treatment.
