Introduction

Polygonatum odoratum ('yu zhu', fragrant Solomon's seal / Angular Solomon's-seal) is a sweet, moist rhizome used in Chinese medicine as a gentle yin tonic — to 'nourish yin, moisten dryness and generate fluids' — for dry cough, dry mouth and throat, thirst (including 'wasting-thirst'/diabetes patterns), and dryness after fevers, without being cloying. It is also eaten as a food and tea. Its steroidal saponins and polysaccharides give researched immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and blood-sugar-lowering activity.

Research

Polygonatum species including P. odoratum and their polysaccharides are reviewed for immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar- and lipid-lowering and cardiovascular-protective effects, and polygonatum polysaccharide has been shown to attenuate lung injury via gut-microbiota modulation; reviews cover the genus's active components and pharmacology. Evidence is chiefly preclinical, alongside long food/tonic use.

Caution

One of the gentler, food-grade tonics and generally very well tolerated. Being sweet and moistening it may not suit those with a lot of cold phlegm-damp, poor appetite or loose stools from cold-damp. Because it can lower blood sugar, monitor if you take diabetes medicines. Distinguish it from the larger 'huang jing' polygonatum, and use good-quality rhizome.

Pregnancy & nursing
