Introduction
Ophiopogon platyphyllus is a broad-leaved lilyturf of the ophiopogon/'mai dong' group, whose small tubers are used like the classic yin-moistening tonic mai dong (Ophiopogon japonicus) to 'nourish yin, moisten the lung, generate fluids and clear heart heat' — for dry cough, dry mouth and throat, thirst, restlessness and dry constipation. Its steroidal saponins (ophiopogonins) and polysaccharides give anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antitussive activity.

Research
Ophiopogon-type tubers (including species used as 'mai dong') and their ophiopogonins and polysaccharides are reviewed for anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitussive, antioxidant and cardioprotective effects, consistent with the traditional yin-moistening use; the genus is well characterised phytochemically and pharmacologically. Evidence is chiefly preclinical, and correct sourcing among mai-dong species matters.

Traditional use
Root-tubers decocted in Chinese medicine to 'nourish yin, moisten the lung, generate fluids and clear heart heat' — for dry irritating cough and dry sore throat, dry mouth and thirst, low-grade heat with restlessness and insomnia, and dry constipation from fluid depletion; a gentle, moistening tonic used within many yin-nourishing formulas (as a mai-dong-type herb).
Current use
A moistening yin tonic tuber of the mai-dong group with researched anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antitussive activity — used for dryness, dry cough and thirst.

Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Tuber decoction in modest traditional amounts per Chinese practice, usually within yin-nourishing formulas.
Child dosage
Modest amounts for children's dry cough/dryness under professional guidance.
Caution
Cool and moistening, so it best suits dryness and 'yin deficiency' and can be too rich for those with weak, cold digestion, loose stools or abundant phlegm-damp, sometimes loosening the stools. Generally well tolerated within traditional dosing. Distinguish it from other mai-dong sources and use good-quality tuber under guidance.
Pregnancy & nursing
Generally a gentle tonic, but use medicinally in pregnancy under professional guidance.
