Polygala japonica is a small milkwort related to the classic 'yuan zhi' polygala, used in Chinese folk medicine to 'resolve phlegm, clear heat and resolve toxicity' and calm the spirit — for cough with phlegm and sore throat, hot sores, boils and abscesses, snakebite, and restlessness or palpitations. Cautionتحذيرات
Its saponins can irritate the stomach in large amounts and may cause nausea, so keep to modest doses, ideally with food or within formulas. As with other milkworts, caution is reasonable with active gastritis or ulcers. Snakebite is a medical emergency needing hospital care.
