Introduction
Plantago asiatica (Asian plantain) is the East-Asian plantain supplying 'che qian zi' (plantain seed) and 'che qian cao' (the herb), used in Chinese medicine to 'drain damp-heat and promote urination', clear the eyes and (paradoxically) firm the stool in damp-heat diarrhoea by redirecting fluids to the bladder; the herb also clears phlegm-heat cough. Its mucilage, iridoids (aucubin) and flavonoids give researched diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

Research
Plantago asiatica ('che qian') is studied for diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and mild antihypertensive effects, with network-pharmacology work on the diuretic/antihypertensive mechanism of plantain seed and anti-inflammatory studies of the crude extract, supporting its traditional urinary, eye and cough uses. Evidence is chiefly preclinical alongside long, safe traditional use.

Traditional use
Seed (usually wrapped) or whole herb decocted in Chinese medicine to 'clear damp-heat and promote urination', brighten the eyes, clear phlegm-heat and 'separate the clear from the turbid' — for painful, difficult or scanty hot urination and urinary stones, damp-heat diarrhoea, red, painful or blurred eyes, and cough with phlegm-heat; the whole herb is also used, and young leaves are eaten as a wild green.
Current use

Adult dosage
Seed (wrapped) or whole-herb decoction in modest-to-generous traditional amounts per Chinese practice.
Child dosage
Used gently (in formulas) for children's damp-heat/urinary or cough patterns under professional guidance.
Caution
A gentle, widely used and generally safe herb, but being diuretic it can add to the effect of diuretic and blood-pressure-lowering drugs and, in large amounts, deplete fluids and potassium — monitor if you take such medicines. Its mucilage may slow absorption of other medicines taken at the same time, so separate dosing. Use good-quality, correctly identified plant.
Pregnancy & nursing
Draining/diuretic — occasional culinary leaf is traditional, but avoid concentrated diuretic medicinal amounts in pregnancy without guidance.
