Lasiosphaera fenzlii ('ma bo', puffball) is a medicinal puffball whose mature dry spore-mass is used in Chinese medicine to 'clear heat', cool the lung and stop bleeding — chiefly for sore, swollen, hoarse throat and cough, and, applied as a powder, to stop bleeding from wounds and the nose. Its spore powder and constituents give haemostatic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. The medicinal puffball (Lasiosphaera / Calvatia) is reviewed for haemostatic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, with network-pharmacology and phytochemical studies characterising its anti-inflammatory mechanisms and constituents; the dry spore powder's traditional use to stop bleeding and soothe the throat is consistent with these findings. Correct identification matters: only the recognised edible/medicinal puffballs at the mature spore stage are used — never confuse a young puffball with the deadly poisonous immature 'egg' stage of an Amanita (which is white and firm inside; a true puffball is uniform inside). Inhaling large amounts of the dry spore powder can irritate the airways (a condition called lycoperdonosis), so handle the powder carefully.
