Introduction
Nelumbo lutea (American/yellow lotus) is the New-World lotus, closely related to the sacred Asian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Its seeds and rhizome are a nutritious food, and — like Asian lotus — its parts are used as calming, astringent and cardiovascular-supportive remedies, rich in antioxidant alkaloids and flavonoids.

Research
American lotus shares the lotus genus's rich antioxidant flavonoids and aporphine alkaloids; research on the closely related Asian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) documents antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, calming, blood-pressure- and lipid-lowering effects, which the yellow lotus is expected to share. Its seeds and rhizome are a documented nutritious food. Species-specific clinical data are limited.

Traditional use
The seeds and rhizome were a staple food of Native Americans; the plant's parts are used (as with Asian lotus) as a calming remedy for restlessness and sleep, an astringent for diarrhoea and bleeding, and for the heart and circulation.
Current use

☾ Prophetic reference☾
The lotus (Nelumbo) is not the sidr/lote-tree (Ziziphus) of the Qur'an despite the shared English word 'lotus'; the Qur'anic sidr is a thorny buckthorn tree, whereas this is an aquatic water-lotus. Noted here to avoid the common confusion between the two 'lotus' plants.
Adult dosage
Seeds/rhizome eaten as food; leaf or seed-embryo infusion in traditional amounts as a calming tea.
Child dosage
The seeds and rhizome are a safe, nutritious food for children.
Caution
The seeds and rhizome are safe, nutritious foods. The leaf and seed-embryo contain aporphine alkaloids and are more medicinal — being calming, they may add to sedative and blood-pressure medicines, so use those preparations modestly. Gather only from clean, unpolluted water. Species-specific safety data are limited.
Pregnancy & nursing
Food amounts of seeds/rhizome are fine; avoid concentrated alkaloid-rich preparations in pregnancy.
