Introduction
Senna sieberiana (Cassia sieberiana, African laburnum / drumstick tree) is a yellow-flowered African cassia whose roots, bark and leaves are widely used for constipation, stomach and pain complaints, fevers, malaria and infections. Its anthraquinones give a laxative action, and studies show antimicrobial, antimalarial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Research
Studies of Senna/Cassia sieberiana root and leaf extracts report analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiplasmodial (antimalarial) activity, and its anthraquinones give the traditional laxative effect — supporting its wide use for the gut, pain, fevers and infections. Evidence is largely preclinical, and the laxative and potent actions mean cautious dosing.

Adult dosage
Small traditional doses of root/leaf per practitioner; the laxative effect is dose-dependent.
Child dosage
Not recommended as a purgative for children.
Caution
The anthraquinone-containing root/leaves are a laxative/purgative — large or prolonged doses cause cramping, diarrhoea and fluid/potassium loss and can make the bowel 'lazy'. Avoid with bowel obstruction and in pregnancy, and don't use long-term. Safety data are limited, so use modest amounts, and seek medical care for malaria.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy — purgative anthraquinones can stimulate the bowel and uterus.
