Introduction
Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed) is a widespread climbing weed used in folk medicine as a laxative and for wounds. A proteoglycan fraction has drawn scientific interest for anti-angiogenic (blood-vessel-blocking) activity, though the plant also contains tropane alkaloids and can be mildly toxic.

Research
Laboratory studies report that a proteoglycan mixture from Convolvulus arvensis has anti-angiogenic and immune-modulating activity, and other work shows anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects; however, the plant contains tropane alkaloids and is noted for toxicity in grazing animals. Human evidence is preliminary and it is not a proven cancer treatment.

Traditional use
Used in folk medicine as a laxative and purgative, a diuretic, and a poultice for wounds, spider bites and the skin; a persistent agricultural weed.
Current use
Some supplements market a bindweed proteoglycan extract; the raw plant is chiefly a weed and folk remedy.

Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
No established safe medicinal dose — the laxative effect is unpredictable and the plant is mildly toxic.
Child dosage
Not for children.
Caution
Can act as a strong, gripey laxative and contains tropane alkaloids, so large amounts may cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and, in excess, toxicity — it is known to poison grazing animals. Do not rely on it as a cancer remedy. Best regarded as a weed rather than a home medicine.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy — purgative and alkaloid content.
