Introduction
Retama raetam (white broom, retem) is a desert legume shrub of the Middle East and North Africa, used in folk medicine as a diuretic and for blood sugar. It contains quinolizidine alkaloids and should be used cautiously.

Research
Animal studies report a diuretic effect and blood-sugar-lowering activity of aqueous Retama extracts, and reviews of the genus describe antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions with the cyclitol pinitol among the active compounds. Human data are lacking.

The retem (رَتَم/غَضَا) is a well-known desert plant of Arabia mentioned in classical Arabic literature; its charcoal was noted for long-burning embers. This is cultural/linguistic heritage, not a specific medicinal prescription from the Sunnah.
Adult dosage
No established safe dose — use only under knowledgeable traditional guidance because of the alkaloids.
Child dosage
Not for children.
Caution
Potentially toxic: the seeds and high doses contain cytisine-type alkaloids that can cause nausea, vomiting and nervous-system effects. Its diuretic and blood-sugar-lowering actions can add to related medicines. Correctly identify the plant and avoid self-dosing.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding — alkaloid content and possible uterine effects.
