Introduction

Artemisia campestris (field wormwood/field sagewort) is an aromatic, less-bitter wormwood of sandy ground, widely used in North African and Mediterranean folk medicine for digestion, worms, snakebite, diabetes and skin/wounds. It is one of the better-studied Artemisia species for antioxidant and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) activity.

Research

Artemisia campestris is well studied: research documents strong antioxidant and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) activity of its extracts, along with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and antivenom effects, and reviews summarise its chemistry and pharmacology. It is milder than true wormwood but still contains bioactive essential oil; evidence is preclinical.

Used for these conditions

Adult dosage

Herb infusion 1–2 g in hot water 1–3× daily, short courses; per traditional practice.

Child dosage

Not typically used medicinally for young children; older children only with guidance.

Caution

Milder than true wormwood but still avoid prolonged high-dose use and use short courses. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may lower blood sugar (caution with diabetes medicines), and Asteraceae allergy sufferers may react. Do not rely on it as the sole treatment for snakebite/scorpion sting — seek emergency care.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid in pregnancy — Artemisia species are emmenagogue/uterine-active; not safe.
