Alstonia scholaris (devil's tree, 'saptaparna', dita bark) is a tree whose bitter bark and leaves are a classic remedy for malaria, chronic fevers, dysentery, diarrhoea and respiratory complaints. Alstonia scholaris is documented (in phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological reviews) for antimalarial, febrifuge, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antidysenteric activity, and its leaf indole alkaloids have been shown to relieve post-infectious cough in animal studies.
