Carlina vulgaris (carline thistle) is a European thistle whose aromatic root has been used in folk medicine as a diuretic and sweat-promoting (diaphoretic) remedy for fevers and colds, as a digestive, and on wounds and skin. Carlina vulgaris is documented as a source of antioxidant phytochemicals (flavonoids and phenolic acids), and Carlina-genus roots contain the antimicrobial essential-oil compound carlina oxide; this supports the traditional diuretic, diaphoretic and wound use. Evidence is preclinical. Root used as a diuretic and sweat-promoting remedy for fevers, colds and flu, as a digestive and 'blood purifier', for urinary complaints, and on wounds, ulcers and skin problems as a wash; also used as a mild antimicrobial and (in the genus) an old country weather-predicting flower.يُستعمل الجذر مُدرّاً ومُعرّقاً للحمّيات والزكام والنزلة وهاضماً و«منقّياً للدم» وللشكاوى البولية وعلى الجروح والقرح ومشكلات الجلد غسولاً؛ ويُستعمل أيضاً مضاداً خفيفاً للميكروبات و(في الجنس) زهرةً ريفية قديمة للتنبّؤ بالطقس.

Cautionتحذيرات
Not well standardised, so use only modest amounts. As a diuretic/diaphoretic, use it cautiously with diuretic and blood-pressure medicines and with adequate fluids, and as an Asteraceae plant it may cause allergy in daisy/ragweed-sensitive people.
