Introduction

Prunus japonica ('yu li ren', bush/dwarf cherry kernel) is the oily seed kernel of an Asian bush cherry, used in Chinese medicine as a gentle moistening laxative and mild diuretic — to 'moisten the intestines and unblock the bowels' for dry constipation (especially in the weak, elderly or postpartum), and to promote urination in oedema and abdominal fullness. Its fixed oil and constituents drive the laxative effect. IMPORTANT: like other Prunus kernels it contains cyanogenic amygdalin, so it is used as properly prepared kernels in correct (not excessive) doses.

Research

Yu li ren (Prunus japonica/humilis kernel) is documented mainly through its traditional use as a moistening laxative and mild diuretic, with its fatty oil lubricating the bowel; the seed and related Prunus kernels show anti-inflammatory and other bioactivities in studies. As with all Prunus kernels, the amygdalin content is the key safety consideration, so processing and correct dosing matter; robust clinical data are limited.

Traditional use

Crushed seed kernels decocted in Chinese medicine to 'moisten the intestines and unblock the bowels' and promote urination — chiefly for dry constipation with hard stool, especially in weak, elderly, postpartum or fluid-depleted people, and for oedema, leg swelling, abdominal fullness and difficult urination; a gentle, moistening laxative used within bowel-moistening formulas.

Current use

A gentle moistening laxative and mild diuretic cherry kernel (yu li ren) — used for dry constipation and oedema; amygdalin-containing, so processed and correctly dosed.

Preparations

• Crushed kernel decoction
• In bowel-moistening laxative formulas
• Processed (de-skinned) kernels

Used for these conditions

Adult dosage

⚠️ Crushed kernel decoction in modest traditional amounts per Chinese practice, usually within formulas; use properly prepared kernels and do not exceed traditional doses.⚠️ مغلي اللُّبّ المسحوق بكميات تقليدية معتدلة بحسب الممارسة الصينية، غالباً ضمن الخلطات؛ تُستعمل ألباب محضّرة جيّداً ولا تُتجاوَز الجرعات التقليدية.

Child dosage

⚠️ Only under professional guidance and in carefully reduced amounts; amygdalin makes children more vulnerable.⚠️

Caution

⚠️ Like apricot/bitter-almond kernels, yu li ren contains cyanogenic amygdalin, which in excess can release cyanide — so use only properly processed kernels within the traditional dose range and never eat large amounts of raw kernels; overdose can cause nausea, dizziness, headache and, in extreme cases, serious cyanide toxicity. Its laxative, fluid-depleting nature is unsuited to those who are already loose or dehydrated, and it is avoided in pregnancy.
