Introduction
Notopterygium forbesii ('qiang huo') is a warm aromatic carrot-family root used in Chinese medicine to 'release wind-cold-damp from the exterior' and relieve pain — especially colds with chills, fever, headache and body aches, and wind-cold-damp joint and muscle pain, classically of the upper back, neck and shoulders. Its coumarins (notopterol type) and essential oil give analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and antioxidant activity.

Research
Notopterygium ('qiang huo') and its coumarin notopterol are reviewed for analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antioxidant and neuroprotective activity, with new anti-inflammatory coumarins reported, supporting its traditional wind-cold-damp and pain-relieving use; reviews cover the genus's chemistry and biological profile. Evidence is chiefly preclinical.

Traditional use
Aromatic root decocted in Chinese medicine to 'release wind-cold-damp from the exterior and stop pain' — for wind-cold colds with strong chills, fever, headache and generalised body and joint aches, especially stiffness and pain of the upper back, neck, shoulders and occipital head, and for wind-cold-damp rheumatic joint pain; often paired with related wind-dispelling herbs.
Current use
A warm wind-cold-damp, pain-relieving root (qiang huo) — used for colds and upper-body/joint aches, with researched analgesic and anti-inflammatory coumarins.

Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Root decoction in modest traditional amounts per Chinese practice, usually within wind-releasing/pain formulas.
Child dosage
Used (in formulas) for children's wind-cold colds/aches under professional guidance.
Caution
Warm, aromatic and drying, so its strong dispersing action can be too much for those who are weak, dehydrated or have heat/'yin-blood deficiency', and large doses may cause nausea — keep to modest amounts and reserve for genuine wind-cold-damp patterns. Confirm the correct 'qiang huo' species and use under guidance for persistent pain.
Pregnancy & nursing
Warm, dispersing root — best avoided in medicinal amounts during pregnancy without professional guidance.
