Introduction
Alstonia boonei (stool wood, cheese wood) is a tall West/Central-African tree whose bitter bark is a major remedy for malaria and fevers, pain and inflammation, and (traditionally) in childbirth and for the womb. Studies confirm antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and ulcer-protective activity.

Research
Studies show Alstonia boonei stem-bark extracts have antimalarial activity in Plasmodium-infected animals and anti-inflammatory, analgesic and gastric-ulcer-protective effects, and reviews confirm its indole-alkaloid and triterpene chemistry — strongly supporting its traditional fever, pain and inflammation uses. Evidence is largely preclinical, and the alkaloids mean cautious dosing.

Traditional use
A major West-African remedy for malaria and fevers, rheumatism, pain and inflammation, and used in childbirth and for the womb (to expel the placenta and for post-natal care), for snakebite, and as a bitter tonic.

Caution
Contains active indole alkaloids: use only modest traditional doses, as high intake can affect the heart and nervous system. Because it acts on the uterus, avoid during pregnancy (except its traditional use at term under skilled care). Seek proper medical care for malaria rather than relying on the herb alone.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy except at term under skilled traditional/medical care — it is used to act on the womb, so it is not for use during pregnancy.
