Introduction
Liriope spicata (creeping lilyturf) provides one of the accepted sources of 'mai dong' (ophiopogon-type tuber), a moistening yin tonic in Chinese medicine used to 'nourish yin, moisten the lung, generate fluids and calm the heart' — for dry cough, dry mouth and throat, thirst, restlessness and dry constipation. Its steroidal saponins (ophiopogonins) and polysaccharides give anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antitussive activity.

Research
Both Ophiopogon japonicus and Liriope spicata are recognised sources of 'mai dong', and their ophiopogonins and polysaccharides are studied for anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitussive, antioxidant and cardioprotective effects; analytical work distinguishes the two species and their quality grades. Evidence is chiefly preclinical, consistent with the traditional yin-moistening use.

Traditional use
Root-tubers decocted in Chinese medicine to 'nourish yin, moisten the lung, generate fluids and clear heart heat' — for dry irritating cough and dry sore throat, dry mouth and thirst (including with wasting/thirsting patterns), restlessness and insomnia from heat, and dry constipation from fluid depletion; a gentle, moistening tonic used in many yin-nourishing formulas.
Current use

Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Tuber decoction in modest traditional amounts per Chinese practice, usually within yin-nourishing formulas.
Child dosage
Modest amounts for children's dry cough/dryness under professional guidance.
Caution
Cool and moistening, so it is best for dryness and 'yin deficiency' and can be too rich/cloying for those with weak, cold digestion, loose stools, or lots of phlegm-damp — it may loosen the stools in such cases. Generally well tolerated within traditional dosing. Distinguish it from other 'mai dong' sources and use good-quality tuber under guidance.
Pregnancy & nursing
Generally considered a gentle tonic, but use medicinally in pregnancy under professional guidance.
