Introduction
Citrus aurantium (bitter/Seville orange) is both a culinary citrus (peel used in marmalade, liqueurs and the flavour 'neroli'/orange-flower) and an important herb: its unripe fruit ('zhi shi') and immature/ripe peel ('zhi ke', 'chen pi'-type) are classic Chinese digestives that move 'stagnant qi', relieving bloating, fullness, indigestion and constipation. Its extract also contains p-synephrine, widely used in weight-loss/'thermogenic' products. ⚠️ Synephrine warrants cardiovascular caution.

Research
Citrus aurantium is documented as a digestive herb and as the main natural source of p-synephrine, studied for mild thermogenic and appetite effects in weight management; systematic reviews and clinical studies indicate that bitter-orange extract/p-synephrine at typical doses does not significantly raise blood pressure or heart rate in most people, though caution is advised (especially combined with caffeine/stimulants or in those with heart conditions).

Traditional use
Unripe fruit ('zhi shi') and peel ('zhi ke') used in Chinese medicine to move 'stagnant qi' and dry 'damp', relieving abdominal bloating, fullness, distension, indigestion, belching and constipation, and (zhi shi) for firmer 'qi-moving' action; the aromatic peel used to aid digestion and flavour, the flowers ('neroli'/orange blossom) as a calming aromatic and flavouring. Modern extracts used for weight management.
Current use
A traditional digestive/'qi-moving' herb (zhi shi/zhi ke) and culinary citrus, and a widely used p-synephrine source in weight-loss supplements; used with cardiovascular caution.

Adult dosage
Peel/fruit in culinary and traditional decoction amounts; standardised p-synephrine extract per product (keep to studied, modest doses).

Culinary amounts are fine; synephrine supplements are not for children.
Caution
⚠️ Culinary bitter orange (peel, marmalade, neroli) is safe. Concentrated p-synephrine weight-loss extracts are stimulant-like: use cautiously, avoid combining with caffeine or other stimulants, and avoid if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmia, are on stimulant, MAOI or heart/BP medication, or before surgery. Like other citrus, bitter-orange juice can interact with certain medications (avoid with 'grapefruit-interacting' drugs).
Pregnancy & nursing
⚠️ Culinary peel/flower amounts are fine; avoid synephrine-containing weight-loss extracts and large medicinal 'qi-moving' doses in pregnancy.⚠️ كميات القشر/الأزهار الطهوية مقبولة؛ وتُتجنّب مستخلصات إنقاص الوزن الحاوية للسينفرين والجُرَع «المحرّكة للتشي» العلاجية الكبيرة في الحمل.
