Introduction
Marrubium peregrinum (peregrine/hoary horehound) is a bitter mint-family herb closely related to white horehound (Marrubium vulgare), the classic cough herb. Its bitter diterpene (marrubiin-type) and phenolic constituents make it an expectorant, antitussive and bitter digestive, used for coughs, bronchitis, poor appetite and indigestion, with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

Research
Marrubium peregrinum is documented for bitter diterpenes and phenolics (verbascoside) with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, in keeping with the well-known expectorant and bitter-digestive use of the horehounds (white horehound, M. vulgare, is a registered cough herb). This supports its traditional cough and digestive use. Evidence is preclinical.

Caution
Very bitter — large doses can upset the stomach and (like white horehound) may affect heart rhythm or blood pressure in excess, so keep to moderate amounts. Avoid in pregnancy (emmenagogue). As a mint-family plant, those allergic to Lamiaceae herbs should use caution.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid medicinal doses in pregnancy — horehounds are traditionally emmenagogue; not established as safe.
