Hydrocotyle vulgaris (marsh/common pennywort) is a small creeping wetland plant with round, umbrella-like leaves. IMPORTANT: despite the shared 'pennywort' name and round leaves, it is NOT gotu kola (Centella asiatica), the famous Ayurvedic brain/skin herb — they are different plants. Researchالأبحاث
Hydrocotyle vulgaris is little studied and should not be confused with the well-researched Centella asiatica (gotu kola). It contains flavonoids and saponins with antioxidant activity but also an acrid, irritant quality; historical accounts suspected it of poisoning livestock. It is largely of botanical interest, and the health claims made for 'pennywort' generally belong to Centella, not to this plant. Evidence is minimal.عشبة القرش المستنقعية قليلة الدراسة ولا ينبغي الخلط بينها وبين Centella asiatica (الغوتو كولا) المدروسة جيداً. تحوي فلافونويدات وصابونينات ذات نشاطٍ مضاد للأكسدة لكن أيضاً صفةً لاذعة مهيّجة؛ واشتبهت الروايات التاريخية بتسميمها للماشية. وهي ذات اهتمامٍ نباتي غالباً، والادّعاءات الصحّية لـ«عشبة القرش» تخصّ عموماً الـCentella لا هذه النبتة. والأدلة ضئيلة.

Recorded only in minor, cautious folk use (as an acrid rubefacient/counter-irritant on the skin, and occasionally as a diuretic); the celebrated 'pennywort' remedies for wounds, memory and skin belong to true gotu kola (Centella asiatica), not to this European species.مسجّلة فقط في استعمالٍ شعبي طفيف حذِر (مُحمِّرة/مُهيِّجة مضادّة لاذعة على الجلد، وأحياناً مُدرّة)؛ وعلاجات «عشبة القرش» الشهيرة للجروح والذاكرة والجلد تخصّ الغوتو كولا الحقيقية (Centella asiatica) لا هذا النوع الأوروبي.
