Fritillaria meleagris (snake's head fritillary) is a beautiful chequered spring bulb grown as an ornamental. IMPORTANT: like other Fritillaria it contains toxic steroidal alkaloids and is poisonous if eaten. While some Asian Fritillaria species are famous cough medicines in Chinese medicine (chuan bei mu), this European ornamental species is not a safe home remedy and its bulbs should be treated as toxic.الفريتيلاريا المُرقّطة (Fritillaria meleagris، رأس الأفعى) بصلة ربيعية جميلة مُرقّطة تُزرَع زينةً. مهمّ: كسائر الفريتيلاريا تحوي قلويدات ستيرويدية سامّة وهي سامّة إن أُكِلت. ومع أنّ أنواعاً آسيوية من الفريتيلاريا أدويةُ سعالٍ شهيرة في الطبّ الصيني (تشوان بي مو)، فهذا النوع الأوروبي الزينة ليس علاجاً منزلياً آمناً وتُعامَل بصلاته سامّة.

The genus Fritillaria is well studied — Asian species (F. cirrhosa, F. thunbergii) are official Chinese cough/expectorant herbs whose steroidal alkaloids have antitussive, expectorant and antihypertensive activity — but these same alkaloids are toxic in quantity.
