Research
Ziziphus mauritiana is well studied: comprehensive reviews document antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, sedative and wound-healing activity across fruit, leaf, seed and bark, and a hypoglycaemic effect of seed extract has been shown in diabetic mice. The fruit is a genuinely nutritious source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Most therapeutic evidence is preclinical.

Traditional use
Fruit eaten fresh, dried and in drinks as a nourishing tonic; leaves used for digestion, diarrhoea, wounds, boils and skin and hair care (and traditionally for washing the body/the deceased); seeds as a calming sleep remedy; bark for diarrhoea and gum problems; the tree also yields prized sidr honey.
Current use
Grown widely for its fruit; used as a nutritive tonic, digestive, sleep aid and skin/hair remedy, and sidr-leaf powder for washing; studied for antidiabetic and wound-healing activity.

☾ Prophetic reference☾
This is one of the sidr / nabk trees (genus Ziziphus). Sidr holds a notable place in Islam: the Qur'an mentions the sidr (lote tree) — the 'Sidrat al-Muntahā' at the boundary of the heavens (Sūrat al-Najm) and the 'sidr makhḍūd' (thornless lote) among the trees of Paradise (Sūrat al-Wāqi'ah). Prophetic tradition recommends washing with water infused with sidr (lote) leaves (e.g. for ghusl and for washing the deceased), and sidr honey and leaves are prized. Note: the classic Arabian sidr of these texts is usually Ziziphus spina-christi; Z. mauritiana is a closely related, widely cultivated sidr/ber, so it shares in the sidr tradition by kinship and use.
Adult dosage
Fruit freely as food; leaf infusion or leaf powder (for washing/skin); seed preparation as a mild sedative in traditional amounts.
Child dosage
Fruit is a healthy children's food; medicinal seed/bark doses only with guidance.
Caution
The fruit and leaf-wash are very safe. Because leaf/seed preparations can lower blood sugar and mildly sedate, those on diabetes or sedative medicines should use caution. Take medicines apart from the fruit's fibre; otherwise it is one of the gentler, more nourishing plants in this collection.
Pregnancy & nursing
Fruit as food is fine and nourishing; keep to food/topical use and avoid concentrated seed/bark medicinal doses in pregnancy without guidance.
