Introduction
Mimosa pigra (giant sensitive plant, catclaw mimosa) is a thorny, fast-spreading wetland shrub — a relative of the touch-sensitive Mimosa pudica — used in folk medicine for wounds, diarrhoea, fevers and pain. Studies show antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity; it contains the amino acid mimosine, so care is needed.

Research
Studies of Mimosa pigra leaf and root extracts report antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity from their flavonoids and tannins, consistent with the traditional use for wounds, diarrhoea, fevers and pain. The plant (like other mimosas) contains mimosine, which is toxic in large amounts, so internal use should be modest. Evidence is largely preclinical.

Traditional use
Used in tropical folk medicine for wounds, sores and skin conditions, diarrhoea and dysentery, stomach complaints, fevers and malaria, pain and rheumatism, and as an antidote and 'blood' remedy.
Current use
Used in tropical traditional medicine as leaf/root decoctions and washes; studied for antimicrobial compounds. Also a major invasive weed.

Caution
Contains mimosine, an amino acid that is toxic in large amounts (it can cause hair loss and other effects in animals grazing heavily on mimosas), so keep any internal use small and short-term, and prefer external use for wounds and skin. Correctly identify the plant. Avoid in pregnancy.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy — mimosine content and possible uterine effects.
