Introduction

Pelargonium reniforme (red rabas) is a South-African geranium closely related to umckaloabo (P. sidoides), the well-known cold-and-cough herb. Its red root is used for coughs, colds, bronchitis, sore throat, diarrhoea and 'blood' complaints, and studies show antibacterial and immune-supporting activity.

Category

• South-African respiratory root (umckaloabo relative)
• Antibacterial / immune-supporting (studied)
• Expectorant — coughs, colds & bronchitis
• Antioxidant / astringent

Research

Studies show Pelargonium reniforme root, like its close relative P. sidoides (the source of the clinically used cold remedy EPs 7630), has antibacterial and immune-modulating activity, supporting its traditional use for respiratory infections. The two species share the coumarin/tannin chemistry behind the well-documented cough-and-cold effects. Evidence for reniforme specifically is mostly laboratory-based.

Traditional use

Used in South-African traditional medicine for coughs, colds, bronchitis, chest infections and sore throat, for diarrhoea and dysentery, stomach complaints, and as a 'blood-cleansing' and general tonic; the root is a common cold-and-cough remedy.

Current use

Used as a root tincture/extract for coughs, colds and chest infections, like umckaloabo; studied scientifically.

Used for these conditions

Adult dosage

Root tincture/decoction in traditional amounts, or per product, for short courses during colds.

Child dosage

Child-appropriate Pelargonium cold remedies exist (as with umckaloabo); use age-appropriate products under guidance.

Caution

Generally well tolerated for short cold-and-cough courses. As with umckaloabo, rare liver-related concerns have been raised for Pelargonium extracts, so avoid prolonged use, and stop if you notice signs of liver upset; it may add to blood-thinning medicines (coumarin content). Avoid in pregnancy and with bleeding disorders.

Pregnancy & nursing
