Introduction
Succisa pratensis (devil's-bit scabious) is a blue-purple meadow flower with an abruptly 'bitten-off' root (source of its name). It was used in folk medicine as a 'blood-cleanser' for the skin, a cough and fever remedy, and a wound wash; the genus shows antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

Research
Devil's-bit scabious is little studied on its own, but it shares the scabious/teasel family's saponins, flavonoids and tannins, which reviews of related species link to antioxidant, antimicrobial and mild anti-inflammatory activity — consistent with its traditional skin, cough and wound uses. Robust clinical data are lacking; use rests on tradition.

Generally regarded as gentle. The saponins can mildly irritate the stomach in large amounts, and little modern safety data exist, so use modest amounts. Daisy/teasel-family allergy is possible. It is a wildflower important to pollinators, so gather sparingly.
