Ayurveda uses the root as a nerve and rejuvenative tonic, and animal studies report anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and nootropic effects. WARNING: the seeds contain LSA, an LSD-related psychoactive alkaloid; eating them can cause nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, panic, a fast heart rate and dangerous reactions, and has led to hospital cases. Ergoline alkaloids can also constrict blood vessels — dangerous with migraine (ergot) drugs and in pregnancy.
