Introduction
Xanthium sibiricum — Siberian cocklebur, Cangerzi — is a Chinese-medicine fruit used mainly for blocked and runny nose and sinus problems; importantly, the fruit/seed is toxic in excess and must be processed and dosed carefully.

Research
The processed fruit has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial effects and is a classic remedy for rhinitis and sinusitis. However, it contains carboxyatractyloside, a liver/kidney toxin, and overdoses (especially of unprocessed fruit or seedlings) have caused serious, sometimes fatal poisoning — correct processing and dose are essential.
