Introduction

Matricaria discoidea (pineappleweed, disc mayweed, rayless/wild chamomile) is a common pathway weed whose crushed flower heads smell of pineapple. A close relative of true chamomile, it is used the same gentle way — a soothing digestive, carminative and calming herb for indigestion, colic, wind and restlessness — and its flowers are edible in teas and salads.

Research

Matricaria discoidea, a close relative of German chamomile (M. chamomilla), contains a chamomile-type essential oil and apigenin-type flavonoids with anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, carminative and mild calming activity, supporting its traditional digestive and soothing use. Evidence is largely from the chamomile group and is preclinical; the plant is a gentle, edible folk herb.
