Hydnocarpus anthelminticus ('da feng zi', chaulmoogra) yields the seed oil that was, before modern antibiotics, the world's main treatment for leprosy for over a thousand years, and is used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for chronic skin diseases and 'wind-toxin'. Its distinctive cyclopentenyl (chaulmoogric/hydnocarpic) fatty acids act against mycobacteria and parasites. Chaulmoogra oil and its cyclopentenyl fatty acids were historically the standard anti-leprosy treatment and show documented antimycobacterial and antiparasitic activity; reviews cover its ethnopharmacology, chemistry and use in chronic skin disease. Seed oil applied to the skin — and formerly taken internally under close supervision — in Chinese, Indian and Southeast-Asian medicine for leprosy and chronic skin diseases (psoriasis-like eruptions, ringworm, scabies, eczema, ulcers, 'wind-toxin' rashes); also used against intestinal parasites. ⚠️ The seeds and oil are irritant and toxic in excess: internal overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and more serious toxicity, and topical use can irritate skin. It is potent, has a narrow safety margin, and has been replaced for leprosy by safer modern drugs — so it should not be self-administered internally.
