Introduction
Enantia chlorantha (Annickia chlorantha, African yellowwood) is a West/Central-African tree with bright yellow, intensely bitter bark used for malaria, fevers, jaundice and wounds. Its protoberberine alkaloids (like berberine) give antimalarial and antimicrobial activity, but at high doses the alkaloids can be toxic.

Research
Studies confirm that Enantia chlorantha extracts and their protoberberine alkaloids have antimalarial activity against Plasmodium and broad antimicrobial effects, supporting its major traditional use for malaria and fevers. Toxicology work notes the purified alkaloid fraction can be harmful at high doses, so controlled, modest dosing is important.

Traditional use
A major West-African remedy for malaria and fevers, jaundice and liver complaints, as a bitter tonic and appetite stimulant, and for wounds, ulcers, skin infections and diarrhoea; the yellow bark is also a dye.
Current use
Used in African traditional medicine as a bitter antimalarial bark decoction; studied for its berberine-type alkaloids.

Adult dosage
Small traditional doses of bark decoction per practitioner; the taste is intensely bitter.
Child dosage
Only under knowledgeable guidance; not for infants (berberine-type alkaloids).
Caution
Contains berberine-type alkaloids: use only modest, controlled doses, as high or prolonged intake can be toxic, and avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding and in newborns (berberine can worsen jaundice in infants). It may interact with many medicines. Seek proper medical care for malaria rather than relying on the herb alone.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid in pregnancy — berberine-type alkaloids are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
