Introduction

Rhus chinensis (Chinese sumac, nutgall tree; syn. Rhus semialata) is a tree famous for the tannin-rich 'Chinese galls' ('wu bei zi') that form on it — an exceptionally astringent, gallotannin- and gallic-acid-rich material used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for diarrhoea, dysentery, coughs, bleeding, sweating, mouth ulcers and wounds. The galls and fruit have well-documented astringent, antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant activity.

Category

• Medicinal tree & galls (Anacardiaceae)
• 'Chinese gall' — tannin/gallic-acid-rich astringent
• Astringent, antimicrobial & antioxidant (well studied)
• Antiviral & haemostatic; gallotannins
• Traditional diarrhoea, cough, bleeding & wound herb
• Also called Rhus semialata
Rhus semialata

Research

Rhus chinensis galls ('Chinese galls') are documented for potent astringent, antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant activity, largely from their very high gallotannin and gallic-acid content (a major natural source of tannic/gallic acid). This strongly supports their traditional use for diarrhoea, bleeding, coughs, sweating and wounds; the fruit is also antioxidant and used as a sour condiment.

Traditional use

Powdered galls taken for chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, chronic cough, coughing of blood, bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding piles, wounds), night sweats and spontaneous sweating, and applied to mouth ulcers, sores, wounds and prolapse as a strong astringent and styptic; the sour fruit used as a condiment. A key Chinese ('wu bei zi') and Ayurvedic astringent.

Current use

A potent astringent, haemostatic and antimicrobial gall/fruit (Chinese gall) with strong research support and a major natural source of gallic/tannic acid.

Preparations

• Gall powder (astringent — small doses)
• External wash / powder (wounds/ulcers)
• Sour fruit (condiment)

Used for these conditions

Adult dosage

Gall powder in small, modest traditional amounts (it is very astringent); external application as a wash/powder. Per traditional practice.

Child dosage

Use only with professional guidance in small amounts.

Caution

Extremely astringent (very high tannin) — large or prolonged internal doses can irritate the stomach, cause constipation, and markedly reduce absorption of iron, minerals and many medications, so keep to small amounts, separate well from meals and drugs, and don't use long-term without guidance. Being in the sumac (Anacardiaceae) family, sensitive individuals may react. Use the correct edible/medicinal Rhus, not toxic sumac species.
