Introduction

Sonchus oleraceus (common / smooth sow-thistle) is a widespread edible weed with soft, dandelion-like bitter leaves and milky sap. The young leaves are eaten raw or cooked as a nutritious, slightly bitter green, and it is used in many traditions as a cooling, mildly diuretic, liver- and digestion-supporting herb. Modern studies report antioxidant and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) activity.

Research

Sonchus oleraceus is documented as a nutritious edible green rich in antioxidants (flavonoids, phenolics, vitamin C), and experimental studies report antioxidant and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) activity, consistent with its traditional cooling, liver- and digestion-supporting use. Evidence is mainly nutritional and preclinical; human clinical trials are limited.
