Research

Potentilla reptans and the cinquefoil genus are documented for high ellagitannin and flavonoid content with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and astringent activity, consistent with the traditional use of these herbs for diarrhoea, mouth/throat inflammation and wounds (as with tormentil, P. erecta). Evidence is preclinical; it is a well-established traditional astringent.

Adult dosage

Root/herb decoction 1–2 g in hot water 2–3× daily; the same cooled as a gargle/wash; per traditional practice.

Child dosage

A weak tea or gargle may be used for older children's diarrhoea/sore throat.

Caution

A useful, gentle astringent, but its high tannin content makes strong long-term internal use hard on the stomach and can reduce iron/nutrient absorption, so take it apart from meals and iron and use short courses. Do not rely on it for serious or persistent diarrhoea/bleeding — seek medical care.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid concentrated medicinal doses in pregnancy without guidance; occasional gargle is gentler.
