Introduction

Gentiana cruciata (cross gentian) is a bitter gentian used, like its relatives, as a digestive and appetite tonic and 'strengthening' bitter. Its secoiridoid bitters give it appetite-stimulating, choleretic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions; historically it had a reputation as a tonic, fever and even snakebite remedy (its old name 'crosswort/cross gentian').

Research

Gentiana cruciata, within the well-studied gentian genus, contains secoiridoid bitters (gentiopicroside, swertiamarin) and xanthones with digestive-stimulating, choleretic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Like other gentians it is a recognised traditional digestive bitter; the historic snakebite reputation is folklore rather than established fact. Evidence is preclinical.

Caution

As with all gentians, a little of this very bitter root is enough. Because it strongly stimulates stomach acid and bile, avoid it with active stomach/duodenal ulcers, severe reflux or gallstones/bile-duct obstruction. Do not rely on the folkloric snakebite reputation — seek emergency care for any envenomation.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid concentrated medicinal doses in pregnancy — strong bitters are traditionally cautioned; not established as safe.
