Introduction
Gentiana asclepiadea (willow gentian) is a tall mountain gentian used, like the famous yellow gentian, as an intensely bitter digestive tonic. Its root's secoiridoid bitters (gentiopicroside) stimulate appetite, saliva, digestion and bile flow, and it is a traditional 'strengthening' and fever remedy with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Research
Gentiana asclepiadea, within the well-studied gentian genus, contains secoiridoid bitters (gentiopicroside, amarogentin) and xanthones with documented digestive-stimulating, choleretic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Gentian bitters are a recognised traditional remedy for poor appetite and dyspepsia; this species is a regional relative of the official yellow gentian. Evidence is preclinical.

Traditional use
Root used as a bitter digestive and appetite tonic for indigestion, bloating, poor appetite and 'weak stomach', to support the liver and bile, for fevers and convalescence, and as a general 'strengthening' bitter; often in digestive-bitters and aperitif formulas.
Current use

Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Root decoction or tincture in small bitter amounts before meals (a little goes a long way); per traditional practice.
Child dosage
Not typically used for young children.
Caution
Very bitter — a little is enough. Because it strongly stimulates stomach acid and bile, avoid it with active stomach or duodenal ulcers, severe acid reflux or gallstones/bile-duct obstruction. Otherwise a well-tolerated digestive bitter; use small amounts before meals rather than large doses.
Pregnancy & nursing
Avoid concentrated medicinal doses in pregnancy — strong bitters are traditionally cautioned; not established as safe.
