Introduction

Solenostemma argel (argel/hargal) is a desert shrub of Sudan, Egypt and the Sahara whose leaves are a well-known folk medicine for digestive, liver, colic and respiratory complaints and as a poor-man's substitute/adulterant of senna. Studies report anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic and anti-obesity activity.

Research

Solenostemma argel is fairly well studied: research documents topical anti-inflammatory activity of the leaves, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory extract effects, an anti-hyperglycaemic effect compared with glibenclamide, and an anti-obesity effect in high-fat-fed rats; a comprehensive review summarises its pregnane-glycoside chemistry and pharmacology. Evidence is preclinical/animal; it is potent, so folk 'liver-cleanse' use should be moderate.

☾ Prophetic reference☾

Argel/hargal is a well-known desert folk medicine of the Nile valley and Sudan and is sometimes mixed with, or substituted for, senna (a Prophetic-medicine plant). Argel itself, however, is a regional traditional remedy, not an authentic prophetic prescription — and should not be confused with, or used to adulterate, genuine senna.

Adult dosage

A light leaf infusion in modest amounts; traditionally used briefly rather than continuously; per traditional practice.

Child dosage

Not recommended for young children medicinally.

Caution

Use in moderation and short-term. It can have a laxative/purgative effect and (being uterine-active) must be avoided in pregnancy. It may lower blood sugar, so those on diabetes medicines should monitor and use caution. It is sometimes used to adulterate senna — buy from a trusted source and identify it correctly.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid in pregnancy — traditionally used for uterine/menstrual cramping and 'cleansing'; considered unsafe medicinally.
