Laboratory and animal studies show blood-sugar-lowering, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of the fruit, mainly from cucurbitacins; but these same compounds make it a violent purgative and toxin. WARNING: colocynth is toxic. Eating the bitter fruit causes violent, bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, and can damage the gut, liver and kidneys — deaths have occurred. Do NOT swallow the fruit or use it as a home laxative, and keep it away from children. Avoid entirely in pregnancy. If used at all, it must be only by a qualified expert in specially processed form.تحذير: الحنظل سامّ. وأكل الثمرة المُرّة يُسبّب إسهالاً عنيفاً مدمّى وألم بطنٍ شديداً وجفافاً، وقد يُتلف الأمعاء والكبد والكلى — وحدثت وفيات. لا تبتلع الثمرة ولا تستعملها مُليّناً منزلياً، وأبعِدها عن الأطفال. ويُتجنَّب كلياً في الحمل. وإن استُعمل، فبيد خبيرٍ مؤهّل فقط في صورةٍ مُعالَجة خاصّة.
