Laboratory and animal studies report anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial and anti-HIV activity of the leaves, and clinical research (mainly in Indonesia) has explored a leaf extract as a reversible male contraceptive that lowers sperm-enzyme function. Note it has been studied as a male anti-fertility agent (it can lower sperm function), so men trying to conceive may prefer to avoid regular internal use.
