Research

Animal studies report blood-sugar-lowering, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, attributed largely to diosgenin, costunolide and eremanthin; the plant is also an industrial source of diosgenin for steroid synthesis. Rigorous human trials are lacking.

Caution

Because it may lower blood sugar, take care if you use diabetes medicines (risk of hypoglycaemia) and monitor levels. Do not confuse it with the unrelated “Costus” (Saussurea/qust) of Arabic tradition. Insufficient human safety data.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid in pregnancy — steroidal saponins and insufficient data.
