Introduction
Polygonatum verticillatum (whorled Solomon's seal) is a woodland lily-relative whose knotty rhizome is a traditional demulcent tonic and, especially, a topical remedy for bruises, wounds and joint injuries ('Solomon's seal' for sealing wounds and mending sprains). Its rhizome is used in Ayurvedic and European folk medicine; CAUTION: its berries are toxic, so only the root is used, cautiously.

Research
Polygonatum (Solomon's seal) rhizomes are documented for steroidal saponins, homoisoflavonoids, mucilage and allantoin with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, demulcent and wound-healing activity, and are used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as a nourishing tonic and connective-tissue/joint remedy. The berries, however, are toxic. Evidence is preclinical; the root is the medicinal part.

Caution
⚠️ Only the rhizome/root is medicinal — the berries are toxic and can cause vomiting and other effects if eaten, so keep them away from children. The root's saponins can irritate the gut in large internal doses, so favour topical use and modest internal amounts. Be sure of correct identification, and avoid internal use in pregnancy.⚠️ الجذمور/الجذر وحده طبيّ — والتوت سامّ قد يسبّب قيئاً وآثاراً أخرى إن أُكِل، فيُبعَد عن الأطفال.
