Research

Laboratory studies show its essential oil and constituents (damascenine, β-elemene) modulate inflammation and have antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, and its extract showed mild oestrogen-like activity in a yeast screen. It is far less studied than true black seed. Human clinical evidence is very limited.

It is poorly studied; avoid therapeutic use in pregnancy.

Pregnancy & nursing

Avoid therapeutic doses in pregnancy — mild hormone-like activity and limited data.
