Introduction
Rubus parvifolius (Japanese/small-leaf raspberry, 'mao mei') is a wild bramble whose root and aerial parts are used in Chinese and other East-Asian folk medicine to 'clear heat, resolve toxicity, dispel wind-damp and invigorate blood' — for rheumatic joint pain, sores, abscesses and sore throat, bleeding, painful periods, and diarrhoea/dysentery, while the sweet berries are eaten. Its flavonoids, triterpenes and tannins give researched anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic and haemostatic activity.

Research
Rubus parvifolius is studied for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic and haemostatic activity, with triterpenoids, flavonoids and tannins as active constituents, consistent with its traditional heat-clearing, wind-damp and blood-related uses; the genus Rubus is broadly recognised for antioxidant polyphenols. Evidence is chiefly preclinical.

Traditional use
Root and aerial parts decocted (and applied topically) in Chinese and East-Asian folk medicine to 'clear heat, resolve toxicity, dispel wind-damp, cool and invigorate the blood and stop bleeding' — for wind-damp rheumatic joint and low-back pain, sores, boils, abscesses and sore throat, traumatic injury and bruising, bleeding and painful menstruation, and diarrhoea or dysentery; the ripe berries are eaten as a wild fruit.
Current use
An astringent, blood-moving wild raspberry (mao mei) with researched anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic activity — used for rheumatic pain, sores, bleeding and diarrhoea; berries eaten.
Preparations
• Root/aerial-part decoction
• Topical poultice (sores/injury)
• Ripe berries (eaten)•
Used for these conditions
Adult dosage
Root/aerial-part decoction in modest traditional amounts per Chinese folk practice, usually within formulas.
Child dosage
Used (in formulas) for children under professional guidance; fruit is fine as a food.
Caution
Generally well tolerated within traditional dosing; its tannins may cause stomach upset or constipation in large amounts and can reduce absorption of iron and some medicines — separate dosing. As it invigorates blood, use the medicinal root cautiously in pregnancy, with bleeding disorders and before surgery. Correctly identify the plant and use good-quality material.
Pregnancy & nursing
Blood-invigorating root — best avoided in medicinal amounts during pregnancy without professional guidance; ripe fruit is a food.
