Ferula communis (giant fennel, 'ferula') is a tall Mediterranean umbellifer — but a dangerous one. It exists as two chemotypes, and the 'poisonous' one is rich in ferulenol, a prenylated coumarin that acts as a powerful anticoagulant and causes 'ferulosis', a fatal haemorrhagic poisoning in grazing animals (and a hazard to people). Ferula communis is well documented toxicologically: it occurs as poisonous and non-poisonous chemotypes, and the poisonous type's ferulenol is a potent anticoagulant that causes the fatal haemorrhagic disease 'ferulosis' in livestock. Its extracts show antimicrobial, cytotoxic and estrogenic activity in the lab, but its overriding practical fact is its toxicity. It is NOT the same as edible fennel or the milder Ferula species used as spice/resin.الكلخ موثّقٌ سُميّاً جيداً: يوجد بطرازين سامّ وغير سامّ، وفيرولينول الطراز السامّ مضادٌّ قوي للتخثّر يسبّب داء «الفيرولوز» النزفي المميت في الماشية. وتُظهر مستخلصاته نشاطاً مضاداً للميكروبات وسامّاً للخلايا وإستروجينياً مخبرياً، لكنّ حقيقته العملية الغالبة سميّته. وهو ليس الشمرة الصالحة للأكل ولا أنواع الحلتيت الألطف المستعملة بهاراً/راتنجاً.

Historically the dried stem was used as tinder, torches and a light material (the mythological 'giant fennel' that carried fire), and small amounts of resin have had limited folk use; because of its toxicity it has NOT been a safe or reliable internal medicine, and grazing animals are regularly poisoned by it.تاريخياً استُعملت الساق المجفّفة حُراقةً ومشاعل ومادّةً خفيفة (الكلخ الأسطوري الحامل للنار)، ولمقادير صغيرة من الراتنج استعمالٌ شعبي محدود؛ ولسميّته لم يكن دواءً داخلياً آمناً أو موثوقاً، والحيوانات الراعية تُسمَّم به باطّراد.

⚠️ Potentially deadly. The poisonous chemotype's ferulenol is a strong anticoagulant that causes internal bleeding (fatal 'ferulosis'), and you cannot tell the two chemotypes apart by eye. Do not eat, self-dose, or combine it with blood-thinning medicines. Do not confuse it with edible fennel or the culinary/resin Ferula species.
